We sat down with Maria Luiza, an HVAC Engineer at MAC Hamburg, to gain insights into her experiences, strategies, and the unique approach they bring to fostering successful partnerships. In this exclusive interview, Maria Luiza shares her perspective on the importance of cultural adaptability, and how teamwork drives lasting success.

1. Can you tell me a little bit about your background? What were you doing in Romania before moving to Germany?

I was working in the shipbuilding industry at a Romanian company. The shipyard I worked with was in Saint-Nazaire, France. My role involved 2D and 3D designing of pipes, ducts, and electrical cable trays. Now, I focus more on HVAC systems in detail.

2. What was it like for you when Middle Point approached you about working in Germany? What was your first reaction?

It was a beautiful surprise! My dream was always to come and work in Germany. I told Shima about this, and she was very supportive. I’ve always liked the idea of working in Germany because the people are respectful, they follow the rules, and they are very reliable. I also wanted to improve my German, which I thought I knew well, but I realized I needed to adapt to the everyday language once I arrived.

3. Did you have any doubts or uncertainties about moving to Germany?

Oh, of course. I didn’t know anyone, and everything was new to me. It was scary starting over in a new country where I didn’t know the language, the city, or the people. I was shocked by the bureaucracy in Germany—it’s slow compared to Romania, where things like internet services and processes are faster.

4. What made you finally take the leap and decide to move?

I wanted to discover myself and see if I was capable of handling this big change. It was a chance to develop both personally and professionally. Shima encouraged me, saying, “You can do it!” and I trusted her.

5. How has working in Germany impacted your career development? Have you learned new skills?

Absolutely. I’ve gained hands-on experience, like solving problems at the shipyard and dealing with crashes on ships. I also learned how to calculate HVAC systems, which was new for me. Additionally, I became proficient in using new software programs. Everything here helped me deepen my understanding of HVAC systems and develop my skills.

6. What differences have you noticed between working in Germany and back home?

Culturally, Germans are more practical and reliable. If they make a promise, they stick to it, and you can count on them. Compared to working with French colleagues, where things were more relaxed, Germans are very focused and efficient.

7. What do you find most rewarding about moving to Germany, both personally and professionally?

I’ve developed myself in so many ways. I’ve learned how to work in bigger teams and navigate cultural differences. I’ve also learned not to take things personally and to stay practical and efficient in my work. These are skills I’ll carry with me for life.

8. What advice would you give to someone considering moving abroad?

Just try it. Even if you’re unsure, give it a chance. You’ll discover your limits and grow as a person. It’s worth exploring what you’re capable of.

9. How do you see your career field evolving in the future?

I see myself growing in my role. I want to develop my skills further and take on more responsibilities. As for the industry, I think it’s thriving. Shipyards, yachts, and cruise ships are in high demand, and this industry will remain relevant for a while.

Listening to Maria Luiza’s share her journey was truly inspiring. From her first steps into the maritime industry to becoming a seasoned professional, her story is one of passion, growth, and unwavering commitment. This story is a reminder that the path to success is rarely a straight line, but with the right mindset and determination, it’s always a rewarding one!
